(Photo by David Patton) over the city volunteered their time and talent to the city. The city didn't take everyone up on their offers, but it says a lot about what Lebanon is made of. When this town is in trouble, its citizens, can pull together to help one another. That's nice to see. We hope it's not a onetime thing, because so much in Lebanon would benefit from just that kind of, support.

The schools, for example. City government. Environmental and economic concerns. If everyone worked together a little more often, Lebanon would only be the better for it. And that storm shows Lebanon can do We hope it doesn't take another storm -of another Christmas season to bring out that spirit in Lebanon.

-v. -v'' x. a the most miserable weather, in dangerous condition, trying in the darkness to locate the trouble so you and I can be comfortable. We are so enslaved to electricity, and so spoiled by its many, many conveniences that we are almost totally helpless without it. These many workers who are on stand-by in case of an emergency need and deserve our gratitude.

Greta Gilmour Lebanon Christmas program disappoints To the editor: I am a single mother with two school-aged children. I work a little more than part time and eggs back to Yakima. In 1967, he quit the trucking business and began a career in barbering. He owned Jim's Barber Shop in Lebanon for 22 years, and retired in 1989. He was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

He liked to fish, hunt, travel and enjoyed welding and making things for people. He made the reader board at his church. He is survived by his wife, Lorraine Roosa of Lebanon; four daughters, Linda" Wilson of Anchorage, Sharon Starr of Eugene, Pat Hupp of Silverton and Marlene'Tesch of Gervais; three sons, Jim Roosa and Raland Roosa, both of Lebanon, and Dale Roosa of Albany; 20 grandchildren, and three greatgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Edward Roosa, and a sister, Theresa Roosa. Contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Huston Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Ralph C. Smith Ralph Charlton Smith, 76, of Lebanon died Friday, Dec. 15 at Lebanon Community Hospital. Memorial services were held Saturday, Dec.

16 at Lebanon's United Methodist Church. Pastor Phil Hanni officiated. His cremains will be interred in Woodland Cemetery in Deer Park, Wash. He was born May 13, 1919 in North Carolina to Walter and Grace (Hudson) Smith. He attended schools in North' Carolina, graduating from college there.

He joined the U.S. Air Force at the age ot 26. He was a pilot in World War II. He flew cargo all over the world. After World War II, he was called back for the Korean War, again flying irgo.

He retired from the' Air Force after 22 years of service as a pilot. He married in 1928 and had four daughters and one son tx-fore his marriage ended in 1970. I have lived in this community for 18-plus years, and I've put. my skills to use working at a care facility, assisting with the elderly, providing my CNA services.

Every year for the past three years, I have accompanied my mother in seeking aid for our children from the Lebanon Christmas Helping Hands program. Not one year has come and gone without seeking assistance from them. Last year, my mother and I encountered extreme injustice. We were violated because of our color in a church. This year, I myself suffered abuse from more than five helpers of the Christmas program.

I was followed by the helpers, discouraged to choose what I liked for my children, shuffled through a line and fully interrogated. I was told, "We don't have to serve you. moved to Deer Park, Wash, where he worked for Orvick Chevrolet as an He married Enid E. Evenson on June 16, 1974 in Deer Park, Wash. He retired in 1978.

The couple spent the winters in Yuma, Ariz, for the next 13 years. They came to Lebanon in 1981, where they settled. He was a member of Lebanon's American Legion 51 and the Garden Spot Grange in Deer Park, Wash. He enjoyed computers, watching television, especially football; reading and doing crossword puzzles. He is survived by his wife, Enid; step-children Ronald Evenson of Deer Park, and Lavonne Daniels of Independence; a brother, Stan Smith of Lantana, numerous grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren, seven step-great-grandchildren and one step-great-great-grandson.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Congregational Church and sent in care of Huston Funeral Home in Lebanon. Helen M. Fenner Helen Marie Fenner, 86, of Lebanon died Thursday, Dec. 14 at her home. Memorial services were held Monday, Dec.

18 at Lebanon's Southside Church of Christ with Pastor Tom Shepherd officiating. Private internment will be at Lebanon's I.O.O.F. Cemetery. She was born in Baker to John I. and Delilah C.

(Tweedy) Davis. She grew up in Willamette Valley. She moved to Lebanon in the 1940s, and settled here. She married Louis R. FennerDon Sept.

17, 1934 in Stayton. She and her husband ran a grocery store and later did janitorial work. Her husband ditd in 1977. She was an active member of Lebanon's Southside Church of Christ. She filled many responsibilities, and was an encouragement to be the Waterloo Falls.

2, 1 91 6, but lived most of her life in Albany and was the owner of the Albany Day Care Center for nearly 40 years. She graduated from Tangent High School in 1935.. The holiday spirit hit Lebanon a little early this year. Christmas and Hanukkah are touted" as the holidays that bring out the best in people. These are the holidays that are meant to fill people with goodwill towards their fellow humans. Well, this year, it wasn't Christmas or' Hanukkah that did it. It was a set of windstorms that brought the best in people.

During Tuesday's storm, a local band of four-wheel drive enthusiasts put their skills to work, braving high winds and falling trees to set up stop signs when traffic lights went down. 16, 1905 in Ostenburg, Germany -to Anton George and Marie (Behrens) Maas. She came to the United States when was nine years old and settled with her family near Marshfield. She married Leonard N. Hadsall on June 25, 1933 in Coquille. The couple moved to Lebanon in 1941 from Coquille.

She worked as "a supervisor of the grading department in battery separator plants at Bandon, Coquille, Marshfield and Lebanon. In later years, she helped with the senior nutrition program in Lebanon. She was an active member of the Lebanon First Baptist Church. She is survived by two nieces, Eleanor Allen of Lebanon and Esther ones or t-iiiiSDoro, ana one iitoik, Alexander Tetefserrof Waldport. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard on Dec.

Linda Marie (Cowdrey) Wilson was born in Lebanon and moved to Albany as an infant, where she grew Letters On the storm To the editor: I thought I was all prepared for a power failure when the storms hit last week, I was just on my way to the kitchen to fix my dinner when suddenly it was pitch black.

Total darkness is just that, black! I was sure I knew where the flashlight, candle, matches and lamp-were, but they seem to have moved. I finally got down and crawled until I could get myself oriented. I then found my matches and lamp, and decided to get a blanket because I would have no electric heat. And I wondered what else to take care of, when glory be here came the light. I gave a loud "Wheel" and thanked God and his army of workers who are out in sold the farm and built a home in Scio, where he lived until his death.

He married Hazel Young on July 7, 1928 in Portland. She preceded him in death on Feb. 8, 1987. He was a member of the Scio Masonic Lodge 39 AF and AM, and the Scio Order of the Eastern Star. He enjoyed fishing, pheasant hunting and gardening.

He is survived" by a daughter, rloraine Goar of Scio; a son, James L. Prokop of Albany; five grandchildren and "six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers and five sisters. Roosa James M. Roosa, 78, of Lebanon died Wednesday, Dec. 1 3 at Lebanon Community Hospital. A funeral service was held Monday, Dec. 18 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Lebanon with Pastor Edwin Rumerfield officiating.

Burial followed at the Lebanon I.O.O.F. Cemetery. He was born Feb. 20, 1917 in Westlotkr Allerta, Canada to Martin and Mary Ellen (LurffFryT Rdsa. The family moved to the Salem area from Canada in 1924.

He attended schools in the Salem area. Before World War II, he started work at Portland Shipyards and worked there for five years. He then moved to Philomath in 1946, where he started a log truck driving business. He married Lorraine Solwold Oct. 6, 1946 in Vancouver, moved (o Lebanon in July 1948 and continued operating his log trucks until 1 9f2, when he changed to long-haul tracking.

He transported apples from Yakima, Wash, to Los Angeles, and on (lie return trip, brought up and received her education, graduating from West Albany High School in 1964. She married Charles R. Wilson on 24, 1963 in Albany. She received. CNA training through Linn-Benton Community College.

She was a volunteer at the Albany General Hospital gift shop for a period of time. She was also a volunteer at LBCC and-FISH. She worked with her husband, Charlie, in his gun shop, and was an active member of the gun club. She enjoyed oil painting and took painting classes at Craft World. She nelped her husband train dogs for a family dog sled and enjoyed camping and four-wheeling.

She also enjoyed hunting and fishing. She stayed at the family camp throughout the whole season. Survivors include her husband, Charles Wilson of Albany; two daughters, Kathleen England of Albany and Debora Hansen of Independence; three brothers, James Cowdrey of Albany, Thomas Cowdrey of Salem and Eugene Cowdrey of Albany; a sister, Marilyn J. McClung of Oregon City, and two grandchildren. Memorials may be sent to the American Cancer Society.

Aasum Autumn Chapel of Albany is handling arrangements. Joe Prokop Joe Prokop, of Scio died Friday, Dec. 1 5 at his home. Funeral services held Tuesday at Huston Funeral Home with Pastor Dan Wilson officiating. Masonic rites were performed by the Scio Masonic Lodge 39.

Private burial will be at Franklin-Buttt- Cemetery, in Scio. He was born Ian. 1 3, 1 898 in New kirk, Okla. to and Antonia (Dvorakl Prokop. He came to Scio in 1906 and settled on his family farm on Gilkey Road, where he farmed until retiring in 1ltf3.
