a A THE LEBANON EXPRESS, Wednesday, Dec. 7, 1966. Wah Family Reunited For the first. time the Bing Leong Mah family is reunited, Mrs. Mah and their son and daughter were left in China in 1947 when Mah came to the United States.

They arrived in Lebanon last week to join him and will assist in the operation of his restaurant on South Santiam Highway. Kong Che, 24 and Yuk Sim, 20, are shown standing behind their parents, (Express Photo) Reunited Chinese Family Now At Home In Lebanon Happiness reigns in the home of the Mah family; joy glows on each countenance and quiet pride id detected in their voices. Mah, who took the name of his sponsor when he came to the United States from China in 1947, is better known locally as Bing Leong. As he introduced to this reporter, his wife and children, who arrived in the states on Nov. 18, he suggested the family name be added to his American nomenclature in the news story to prevent confusion in identity.

ed due to the fact that Mah's: entry had not been properly reg corded When he arrived the states and to the fact that his wife and children hadbeen forced to leave their village in the Canton province of China during his absence to evade the communist forces and had sought asylum in Hong Kong where they had since lived in the city of Kowloon, The trio made the trip to A- merica by plane. They related that due to time zone changes, even though the entire trip took 19 hours including three hour stops in both Tokyo and Hawaii, they left Hong Kong at 3 in the afternoon of Nov. 18 and arrived at 6 p.m, in San Francisco the same calendar date. a reunion and visit at the home of Mrs. Mah's uncle in Oakland the family traveledto Portland where they visited her cousin before returning to Lebanon and the home Leong had rented for them on.

1, Starting Jan. 1, Mrs. Coffey said, persons 65 and over who have been hospitalized for at least three days since the hospital insurance part "of Medicare began operation on July 1, maybe eligible for payment of the costs of continued treatment in a' skilled nursing home or other institution that qualifies for participation in Medicare. Medicare can pay all the basic costs of up to 20 days in an extended care facility certified to participate in Medicare and all but $5 a day for an additional 80 days, To quality, the person must have entered an extended care facility for continued treatment within 14 days of leaving the hospital, following his hospital stay. This extended care benefit of Medicare is a special kind of benefit that will be needed by only a limited number of those who are hospitalized, Mrs.

Coffey explained, It is designed to. provide skilled nursing care at less cost than hospital care for those who no longer need the intensive care of a hospital, a Only this skilled nursing care, generally needed for a short period, will be paid for by Medicare, Long-term custodial care in a nursing home is not covered, Mrs. Coffey also Indicated that many existing nursing homes will not quality to provide this special kind of benefit to Medicare beneficiaries, because they provide custodial: services or residential care rather than skilled full-time nursing care, estimate that at any one time. no more than 20 to 25 percent of the capacity of all types of skilled nursing homes in the country will be used by Medicare beneficiaries," Mrs. Coffey said, About 4600 nursing homes cross the country had sent in applications to participate in Medicare by the middle of November, according to Mrs.

Coffey, State agencies are now surveying these institutions to see if they meet the quality stand ards. in the Medicare law, The Public Health -Service, on the basis of its review, determine whether each institution meets the non discrimination requirements of the Civil Rights Act. A leaflet with information for Medicare beneficiaries and their families about the extended care benefits that become payable in January is now available free of charge from the social security office in Salem, located at 702 Churcir ST.
